Fair trade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development for marginalized, poor workers in the developing world. Fair trade companies pay their workers a living wage and receive a fair price for their product in the context of the local economy. A living wage insures that a worker earns enough to provide basic housing, food, education, and medical care for their family based upon local standards. Fair trade companies provide safe and healthy working conditions and offer equal employment opportunities. Many hire mostly women because they are the neediest and have the least opportunity to move to self sufficiency. Emphasis is placed on sustainable production which offers security and long term employment, and forced or child labor is not allowed. They also follow environmentally friendly practices.
