Micro Enterprise is simply a very tiny, usually home based, business. In the developing world they can be started for as little as $100-200 and can provide enough steady income to lift a person out of poverty by using their own talents and efforts. The money could be used to purchase tools to start a bicycle repair business, for a sewing machine to make clothing, for a goat to start producing milk for sale, for farming instruments to provide enough produce to market, or other similar endeavors. Imagine, you can dramatically change a person's life and even those of her family for as little as $100. That is such an unbelievably small amount by our standards but such an unattainable amount for the more than 1 billion people who live below the international poverty level of less than $1 per day as determined by the UN. We believe that the only way out of poverty is through economic opportunity and business success, combined with education and not through handouts. Owning even a tiny business or securing a job that pays a living wage (see fair trade) allows a woman to provide for her family, and builds self esteem and dignity. It can even mean the difference between life or death.
